Afterword: Final Thoughts
Afterword: Final Thoughts
The CMO role is not forever. I said this earlier in the course, and it is worth ending on it too.
More than anything, it is a role that will challenge you. You need real expertise across a lot of different domains, and the learning never stops — it only becomes more specific. You have to trust your colleagues, sometimes in decisions you would have made differently. You will go through confrontations, some professional and some uncomfortably personal. You must not be afraid to speak your mind, even when the room is set up to make that costly. And you have to be sure, before you take the role, that you actually want it. It comes with real responsibility. It will change how you think, how you sleep, how you spend the small amount of time that stays your own. It can help you a lot, or it can wear you down — often both at the same time.
I was one of just some hundred people in an 80-million-person country who held a leadership marketing role in a company that went through an IPO and, later, had to undergo serious restructuring. Neither side of that experience was easy. But both taught me things I could not have learned any other way. Challenging myself was the good part. It kept the work interesting. It kept me learning. And it produced whatever authority I now have to write this course at all.
If there is one line I would leave you with, this is it.
Strategy is focus. Even when more feels possible. Even when repetition starts to bore you, and starts to bore the team. It still pays off. Focus aligns to the resources you actually have. Focus is what lets you perfect execution instead of scattering it. Focus is what compounds — quarter after quarter, decision after decision — into a business that scales and a career that builds.
That is the whole game.
Good luck out there.
